I’ve tutored IB English for 8 years, mainly Language & Literature students who need sharper essay structure and cleaner analysis under time pressure. A lot of my work is on Paper 1 and the Individual Oral, because that’s where students often lose marks through vague points. I’m quite direct in lessons and I’ll usually stop an answer halfway through if I think it can be said better. That tends to help students move from a 4 or 5 to a solid 6.

We do a lot of work on Paper 2 comparisons, building arguments that feel clear rather than forced. I’m quite relaxed, but I do push students to be precise with quotations and interpretation. I teach both Literature and Language & Literature, and I’m especially useful for students who are bright but disorganised. We’ll usually spend as much time cutting weak points as adding new ones, which makes a big difference in English.

I teach IB English because I genuinely like close reading and argument, and that tends to rub off on students after a few weeks. Most of the people I help are capable readers who panic in timed conditions or over-explain simple points. We work on making essays tighter, not longer. I also spend a lot of time on the IO, especially choosing extracts and building a line of inquiry that actually holds together when spoken aloud.
